Preparing for Your Multi-Day Adventure

Heading to the “Mountains of the Moon” is the trip of a lifetime. But because Ruboni is tucked away in a high-altitude rainforest environment, success lies in your preparation. Whether you are coming from Kampala or flying in from abroad, here is how to get ready.

1. Getting Here

Ruboni is located in Western Uganda, about 25km from Kasese town.
From Kampala: It’s a scenic 6-7 hour drive via Fort Portal or Mbarara.
Public Transport: Take a bus to Kasese, then a “special hire” taxi or a boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) for the final leg into the mountains.

2. What to Pack

The weather here is unpredictable. You can have bright sunshine at noon and a tropical downpour by 2:00 PM.
Footwear: Broken-in, waterproof hiking boots are non-negotiable.
Layers: Pack moisture-wicking base layers, a fleece for the chilly nights, and a high-quality rain jacket.
Protection: High-factor sunscreen and insect repellent. The sun is stronger at altitude!

3. Physical Prep

You don’t need to be an Olympic athlete, but Ruboni is hilly. Start walking or hitting the stairs a few weeks before your visit to ensure you enjoy the Forest Portal trails rather than gasping for air!
Pro Tip: Always carry a reusable water bottle. Ruboni is a conservation-focused community, and we strive to minimize plastic waste.
